Cooper vs. Murrow vs. Cult of Celebrity

Anderson Cooper's new daytime talk show reminds us of Ed Murrow and Person to Person. Cooper is not exactly Murrow, but it's worth noting from a historical perspective that Cooper is not the first serious TV journalist to embrace the cult of celebrity.

And while Mr. Cooper appears to demonstrate no shame or embarrassment about his new project, Murrow (who didn't mind rubbing elbows with celebrities throughout his career) is quoted in at least one of the three excellent biographies written about him saying something like, "Person to Person is the show I have to do, in order to do the show I want to do."

The show Murrow wanted to do was the groundbreaking news magazine See It Now.
